What is Faith's Law?

Faith's Law was passed as two pieces of legislation in the state of Illinois. Several changes went into place over a couple of years. The criminal definition of grooming was expanded to include in-person behaviors (it formerly only included online solicitation). Schools are now required to have a code of conduct that defines and prohibits sexual misconduct and outlines professional boundaries. New applicants are screened for substantiated sexual misconduct in their employment history.

Together these changes have raised awareness about boundary-violating behaviors within schools. Sexual abuse prevention is best accomplished when all adults within an institution partner in best practices.

Most educators would never harm a student, but those who do can create a lifetime of destruction. Faith's Law and others like it can help equip bystanders to prevent this harm.

More information about Faith's Law can be found on the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) website.
